2026 Dubbed the Age of the Croaking Craze.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are not at all new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. Yet, their popularity has noticeably exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are bona fide amphibian adventures.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To quantify this rise, I undertook a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings paint a clear picture: a consistent rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is partially evident elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the wave in gaming seems especially strong.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Frankly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues facilitate a myriad of unique mechanics.

Several the featured titles directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be entering a true croaking cultural moment.
