No league promotes competitive balance like the NFL: it's their core marketing message. However, after 10 weeks in this campaign, this isn’t a league featuring uniform distribution separating contenders, pretenders, and middle-of-the-pack clubs. It’s one where the majority of teams are merely sufficient.

NFC Standings Definition

Within the National Football Conference, for the most part, the picture becomes more distinct. The Rams and Seahawks (both at 7-2) look like the most well-rounded squads in football, and delivered overwhelming triumphs in their weekend matchups. The 6-2 Eagles despite their struggles maintain among the most gifted lineups across the NFL, similar to the Packers franchise (five wins, two losses, one tie). Detroit as well (6-3 standing), who have been inconsistent in trench play and have been dealing with internal staff conflicts, have proven they're capable of dominating good teams. For each of these squads, you can still easily construct a route to the final game.

Muddled AFC Picture

Turning to the American Football Conference, the playoff picture remains completely chaotic. The four teams leading their divisions after ten games: the Colts, Patriots, Broncos (all at 8-2) and the Steelers (5-4 record). Take another look. Not the Chiefs. Not the Bills. Not the Ravens or Bengals. The traditional powers, backed by the league’s best quarterbacks, display either glaring roster weaknesses or are dealing with health issues.

Parity Mechanics

To some extent, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. Yet observing this season's top AFC teams within the conference remains somewhat odd. Aspects of each franchise pass the championship smell test, though not comprehensively. If someone requested to commit to your AFC Championship game picks at this moment, would you comfortably pick any of these four teams?

Squad Examinations

Colts Situation

Starting in Indianapolis, their quarterback hasn't descended to complete disaster level. Yet the past two games have been worrying. He’s back to committing turnovers and failing against blitzes. He took seven sacks against the Falcons in the weekend game, and endured a brief period in which he threw a pick and fumbled three times. This is a week after he committed turnovers five times against the Steelers.

The Colts’ offense thrived early in the season as Jones prevented game-changing errors. Jonathan Taylor and the offensive line ensure Indianapolis remains good enough to survive periodic mistakes, as they did in Berlin. But Jones returning to his previous error-filled form would finish any playoff run.

Patriots Examination

The Patriots feel relatively comparable. Previously, they were considered jokes. Now, they’re the NFL's most pleasant shock and the strongest squad in the NFL following seven consecutive victories. If not for committing turnover errors a contest they should have won facing Pittsburgh, they would currently hold a 9-1 record with the top standing. Last season, they were old and slow. Now they’re youthful, quick and confident. However, we must acknowledge the weakness of New England's opponents. They have faced the least challenging lineup across the NFL, and flaws have still emerged. Their quarterback has taken sacks thirty-five times – the second-most in football – including particular impacts he suffered last weekend proved brutal. Over time, those beatings accumulate.

Denver Broncos

Denver stands at 8–2 as well, yet it seems that they're barely surviving. Their quarterback has performed unevenly, and the offensive unit laboring, as the defense handles most of the responsibility. Lacking competent QB performance, the Broncos won't frighten any playoff team. The Chargers are also contending within their division with seven wins, yet medical problems within their blocking corps will present challenges to achieve championship contention.

Steelers Examination

Then we have the Steelers, inexplicably frontrunning their division despite being thumped 25-10 by the Chargers on Sunday night. Their scoring margin remains negative, their defense too often disappears, and Aaron Rodgers’ limitations at this stage of his career persistently appear. They maintain a 5-4 record while surviving, but Baltimore, with Lamar Jackson healthy again and the schedule softening, have won three consecutive. This development isn't entirely shocking that the Ravens have pulled the gap to just one game, but how rapidly this occurred represents criticism toward Pittsburgh's fluctuating form. That the Ravens started with a 1-5 record yet still appear likely to claim the title reveals much about the conference as a whole.

Traditional Powers

Baltimore constitutes part of the Big Three – together with Bills and Chiefs – powered by their MVP quarterbacks, that would continue to generate the highest anxiety in opposing teams if they made the playoffs. They're the teams everyone hopes to avoid, yet Kansas City and Buffalo cannot get out of their own way.

Buffalo Bills

A week ago, the Bills felt confident following victory over Kansas City. On Sunday they suffered a particularly discouraging setback this year. They didn't simply fail to the Dolphins; they were embarrassed, falling 30-13 on the road. The Dolphins secured their first triumph against Buffalo in over three years.
