LA Battles Historic Heat Just One Week After Major Winter Weather.
Following a week of torrential rains that led to inundation across areas in the city, the City of Angels is now grappling with unusually warm conditions for the end of February.
All-Time High Temperatures
During the day Friday, the temperature reached 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in downtown Los Angeles, per data from meteorologists. This breaks the old record for this date, which was 88°F (31°C) and was established just last year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were highlighted on official graphics for the region.
Safety Alerts
Authorities issued a warning that Friday's heat posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their advice included:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Not leaving kids or animals unattended in a hot car.
A Sharp Shift
This sudden spike in heat follows closely after a intense storm system that battered the region recently. That system unleashed high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to the mountains, leading to flash flood warnings for millions residents.
Tragically, the storm also resulted in a deadly avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Weekend Outlook
The outlook suggests a cooldown is expected. The heat were forecast to drop to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown LA by overnight.
Several cities that reached ninety degrees featured Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Elsewhere, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were projected to see the upper eighties.
For the weekend, downtown Los Angeles can anticipate weather in the 80s, with a further cooldown on tap for the start of March.
