Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australian One-Day International Team Against India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from Australia's three-match ODI series versus India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a surprise selection.
Performance Issues Result in Omission
Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international squad following scoring just one run in both of his innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a highest score of 47 in his previous ten ODI batting appearances.
Labuschagne has played 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now work towards a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.
Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Changes
There have been indications of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
The left-hander has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a return to the Test team as Australia seek a solution to their opening batting issues.
Pace Additions and Injury Updates
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after having time off since performing well for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Squad Selection Approach and Schedule
Australia have announced a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-match series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the last match against New Zealand to clinch a 2-0 series win last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India commences on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from 29 October.
