The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as a number of outfits for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
