Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that depict the scene of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures originated was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.

Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the footage were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
